Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions people actually ask us.

Themis is an AI tool that optimizes resumes for Applicant Tracking Systems without fabricating information. Everyone starts with a free tier (3 resumes and cover letters per month), with paid plans for heavy users.

About the Service

Wait, does this actually work? Like, will I actually get more interviews?

Look, we can't guarantee you a job—nobody can. But here's what we do know from research:

  • Putting the exact job title in your summary's first line = 10.2x more callbacks
  • Using strong action verbs = 140% more impact
  • Having 475-600 words = 2x more interviews

We bake all of this into every optimization. Is it magic? No. But it's the closest thing to a cheat code for getting past ATS filters.

Are you going to make stuff up on my resume?

Absolutely not. This is a hard line for us. We will never invent skills, experiences, or metrics you didn't provide. If you wrote "helped with sales," we won't change it to "increased revenue by 47%."

What we DO: reword things to be stronger, add keywords naturally, reorganize content for impact. What we DON'T do: lie.

What's an ATS and why should I care?

ATS = Applicant Tracking System. It's the software companies use to manage job applications. Think of it as a robot bouncer.

When you apply online, your resume goes into the ATS first. It scans for keywords, formatting, and other stuff. If your resume doesn't match what it's looking for, you get auto-rejected. 75% of resumes never make it past this stage.

That's where we come in—we make sure your resume speaks the robot's language so it actually gets to a human.

How is this different from ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI. You CAN use it for resumes, but you'd need to:

  • Write detailed prompts about ATS optimization
  • Manually extract keywords from job postings
  • Know what "good" resume formatting looks like
  • Check that it didn't hallucinate fake accomplishments
  • Format everything into a proper document

Themis does all of this automatically. We've built specific prompts based on hiring research, we extract keywords for you, we verify nothing gets fabricated, and we spit out a ready-to-submit Word doc. It's like the difference between flour and a cake.

I've been applying for months with no luck. Will this actually help?

If you've been mass-applying with the same generic resume, there's a good chance your applications are getting filtered out by ATS before anyone even sees them. That's literally what we're built to fix.

Here's the thing though: we're not magic. If you're applying for jobs you're genuinely unqualified for, no amount of optimization will help. But if you have the skills and you're just not making it past the initial filter? Yeah, we can probably help with that.

The free tier gives you 3 resumes to try it out. See if your callback rate improves before committing to anything.

Who actually uses this? Job seekers? Career coaches?

Mostly individual job seekers—people actively looking for work who want to maximize their chances. We see a lot of:

  • Recent grads entering the job market for the first time
  • People switching industries or roles
  • Laid-off workers trying to move fast
  • Employed folks quietly testing the waters

We also have some career coaches and resume writers who use it to speed up their work, but that's not our main audience.

How It Works

How long does it take?

Usually 30-60 seconds. Sometimes up to 2 minutes if the AI is being thorough (or having a moment). You'll see a progress indicator so you know it's working.

What file formats do you accept?

PDF, Word (.docx, .doc), and plain text (.txt). You can also just paste your resume text directly if you prefer.

We output a Word document because that's the most ATS-friendly format. PDFs can sometimes cause parsing issues with older systems.

Can I use the same resume for multiple jobs?

I mean, you can, but you shouldn't. The whole point of ATS optimization is tailoring your resume to each specific job posting. Different jobs = different keywords = different optimizations.

That said, if you're applying to very similar roles at different companies, you might be able to reuse one optimization. Use your judgment.

Should I still have a human review my resume?

Yes, always. We show you exactly what changed and flag anything that needs verification. Take 5 minutes to read through the output before submitting. Make sure it sounds like you and accurately represents your experience.

AI is a tool, not a replacement for your judgment.

My resume has some weird formatting. Will that mess things up?

We're pretty good at parsing messy resumes, but really complex formatting (multiple columns, heavy graphics, weird tables) can sometimes cause issues. If the parser struggles, try pasting your resume text directly instead of uploading the file.

Pro tip: If your current resume is heavily designed with graphics and columns, you might want to strip that down anyway. ATS systems often choke on fancy formatting—that's part of why you're getting filtered out in the first place.

What if the optimized resume doesn't sound like me?

That can happen, and it's why we always recommend reviewing the output. The Word document is fully editable—tweak any phrasing that feels off before submitting.

We also show you a change log so you can see exactly what was modified. If a particular rewrite feels too corporate or doesn't match your voice, just change it back. The keyword additions will still help even if you adjust some of the wording.

Do I need a different resume for every single job application?

Ideally? Yes. Different jobs have different keywords, and ATS systems are looking for specific matches.

That said, if you're applying to 50 jobs a day, that's not realistic. Here's a practical approach:

  • For jobs you really want: take the 2 minutes to optimize specifically for that posting
  • For mass applications: create 2-3 "template" versions optimized for different role types, then use the closest match

Quality over quantity usually wins. Ten tailored applications will probably beat a hundred generic ones.

Pricing & Subscriptions

How does the free tier work?

Everyone starts on the free tier which includes 3 resumes and 3 cover letters per month, plus a one-time 5-minute voice interview trial. Your resume and cover letter allowances reset every 30 days from your signup date.

No credit card required. If you need more, you can upgrade to a paid plan or buy credits.

What are the paid plans?

We offer three paid monthly plans:

  • Student ($12.99/mo): 30 resumes, 30 cover letters, 2 voice interviews
  • Pro ($28.99/mo): 75 resumes, 75 cover letters, 5 voice interviews
  • Elite ($49.99/mo): Unlimited resumes, unlimited cover letters, 10 voice interviews

Annual plans available at a discount. Cancel anytime. Allowances reset monthly.

Do pay-as-you-go credits expire?

Nope. Never. Buy them now, use them in 3 years. Credits can be used when you exceed your subscription allowances (1 credit per resume or cover letter).

Can I get a refund?

No, all purchases are final. Credits and subscriptions are digital goods delivered immediately, so we can't offer refunds.

That's why we offer a free tier—try the service before you buy. If you have technical issues, reach out to support and we'll make it right. See our Terms of Service for full details.

What's the Founding Member thing? Is it worth it?

Founding Member is a one-time payment of $299.99 that gives you Elite-tier benefits (unlimited resumes, unlimited cover letters, 10 voice interviews/month) for life. No monthly fees, ever.

Math-wise: if you'd use the Elite plan for more than 7 months, Founding Member saves you money. If you're just job searching for a month or two, probably stick with a regular subscription.

We're limiting it to 100 spots as a thank-you to early supporters. Once they're gone, they're gone.

I just need like 5 more resumes this month. What's my cheapest option?

Buy the small credit pack: 10 credits for $2.50. Each resume or cover letter costs 1 credit, so 10 credits = 10 resumes/cover letters.

Credits never expire, so if you don't use all 10 this month, they'll still be there next time you need them.

Can I cancel my subscription anytime?

Yes. Cancel whenever you want from your account settings. You'll keep your benefits until the end of your current billing period, then you'll drop back to the free tier.

No tricks, no "call to cancel" nonsense. Just click the button and you're done.

Voice Interviews

Wait, I can practice interviews by phone? How does that work?

Yep! You set up your interview (pick a type, upload your resume, paste the job description), and we give you a phone number to call. Our AI interviewer conducts a realistic mock interview based on the role you're targeting.

After you hang up, you get detailed feedback:

  • Overall score and breakdown by category
  • Feedback on each answer—what worked, what didn't
  • Example answers showing how you could've done better
  • Speech stats (talking pace, filler words like "um" and "like")
  • Full transcript and audio recording you can replay

It's the closest thing to real interview practice without bothering a friend or paying a career coach $200/hour.

Is the AI interviewer going to sound like a robot?

It's pretty natural, honestly. We use advanced voice AI that can hold a real conversation—it'll ask follow-up questions, react to your answers, and push back if your answer is vague (just like a real interviewer would).

Is it indistinguishable from a human? No, probably not. But it's close enough that you'll actually feel nervous, which is kind of the point. If you can stay calm talking to our AI, a real interview will feel way less intimidating.

How does the free interview trial work?

Every free account gets one 5-minute voice interview. This is a one-time thing—it doesn't reset monthly. Think of it as a test drive.

Five minutes is enough to do a Quick Practice session (3-4 questions) and see how the whole thing works. If you like it, you can upgrade for more:

  • Student plan: 2 interviews/month
  • Pro plan: 5 interviews/month
  • Elite plan: 10 interviews/month

You can also use pay-as-you-go credits (10 credits per interview) if you just need one more before a big interview.

What types of interviews can I practice?

We've got 6 different interview types to choose from:

  • Quick Practice (5-7 min) — 3-4 rapid-fire questions, perfect for warming up
  • HR Screening (12-15 min) — The "tell me about yourself" classic recruiter call
  • Behavioral (12-15 min) — STAR method questions like "Tell me about a time when..."
  • Technical (12-15 min) — Role-specific questions (engineering, marketing, finance, etc.)
  • Case Interview (12-15 min) — Consulting-style problem-solving scenarios
  • Final Round (12-15 min) — Mix of everything, like meeting with the hiring manager

The questions are tailored to your actual resume and the job you're applying for, so it's not generic stuff you'd find on Google.

I'm nervous about being recorded. Who can hear my interview?

Only you. Your recordings and transcripts are private to your account. We don't listen to them, we don't share them, and we definitely don't sell them.

You can also share your results with a specific link if you want feedback from a friend or mentor—but that's optional and controlled by you.

What if I freeze up or give a terrible answer?

That's... kind of the point? Better to freeze up talking to our AI than in an actual interview with your dream company.

The AI will handle awkward pauses gracefully, and your feedback report will show you exactly what went wrong and how to fix it. That's the whole value—learning from mistakes in a safe environment.

Most people bomb their first practice interview. By the third one, they're way more confident. That's the process working.

Can I practice for a specific company or role?

Yes! When you set up the interview, you paste the actual job description. The AI uses that to generate relevant questions—so if you're applying for a Product Manager role at a fintech startup, the questions will reflect that.

It also pulls from your resume, so it might ask about specific projects or experiences you listed. Feels surprisingly real.

How soon after the call do I get my feedback?

Usually within 2-3 minutes. After you hang up, our AI analyzes the conversation and generates your detailed report. You'll get an email when it's ready, or you can just refresh your dashboard.

Occasionally it takes up to 5 minutes for longer interviews. But it's pretty quick.

Privacy & Security

Is my resume data safe? Are you selling it?

Your data is yours. We don't sell it. Period.

We store your resumes so you can reuse them for future optimizations. We use OpenAI's API to process them, but that data isn't used to train their models (per their API terms). You can delete your account and all associated data anytime from your settings. Read our full Privacy Policy for complete details.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. Go to Settings → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account and all data (resumes, jobs, generated documents, everything). This action can't be undone.

Are you training AI on my resume?

No. We use OpenAI's API for processing, and per their API terms, they don't use API data to train their models. Your resume isn't going into some giant dataset.

We also don't do any training ourselves. Your data is used only to provide you with the service.

My company might be monitoring my computer. Is this safe to use at work?

We can't speak to your company's monitoring practices—that's between you and your IT department. From our side, we use HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, so the content of what you're doing is protected.

That said, if your company monitors web traffic, they could potentially see that you visited themis.careers. If discretion matters, use your personal device on your personal network.

How long do you keep my data?

As long as your account exists. We store your resumes and generated documents so you can reuse them—that's a feature, not a bug.

When you delete your account, everything goes with it. We don't keep backups of deleted accounts. Once it's gone, it's gone.
